| Dog Friendly Beaches |
Rehoboth Beach
From April 1 to October 31, pets are not allowed on the beach or
boardwalk at any time. However, during the off-season, dogs are
allowed but need to be leashed and cleaned up after. The beach
is located off Route 1, north of Dewey Beach.
Dewey Beach
Dogs are allowed on the beach year-round only with a special
license and with certain hour restrictions during the summer
season. A special
license is required for your dog to go on the beach. You do not
have to be a resident of Dewey Beach to get the license. You
can obtain
one from the Town of Dewey Beach during regular business hours
at 105 Rodney Avenue in Dewey Beach. The cost is $5 per dog
and is good
for the lifetime of your dog. During the summer, from May 15
to September 15, dogs are only allowed before 9:30am and after
5:30pm. During
the off-season there are no hourly restrictions. Year-round,
dogs can be off-leash but need to be under your control at
all times and
cleaned up after.
Delaware Seashore State Park
This park offers six miles of ocean and bay shoreline. Dogs on
a 6 foot or less leash are allowed on the beach, with a couple
of exceptions.
Dogs are not allowed at the lifeguarded swimming areas. However,
there are plenty of non-guarded beaches where people with dogs
can walk or sunbathe. During the off-season, dogs are allowed
on any
of the beaches, but still need to be leashed. People are required
to clean up after their pets. The park is located south of
Dewey Beach, along Route 1 and north of the Indian Bay Bridge.
Cape
Henlopen State Park
This park draws thousands of visitors who enjoy sunbathing
and ocean swimming. Dogs on a 6 foot or less leash are allowed
on
the beach,
with some exceptions. Dogs are not allowed on the two swimming
beaches during the summer, but they are allowed on surfing
and fishing beaches,
bike paths and some of the trails. Pets are not allowed on
the fishing pier. During the off-season, dogs are allowed
on any
of the beaches,
but still need to be leashed. People are required to clean
up after their pets. The park is located one mile east of
Lewes, 1/2 mile
past the Cape May-Lewes Ferry Terminal. |
Fenwick Island State Park
Open daily from 8 am to sunset year around, this 344 acre park
is a 3 mile long barrier island with plenty of surf and turf
recreational
opportunities. Concessionaires and modern conveniences are available.
Dogs are allowed throughout the park and on the surf fishing
beaches; they are not allowed on swim beaches. Dogs must be
well behaved,
leashed, and cleaned up after at all times.
Fenwick Island Beach
From May 1 to September 30, dogs are not allowed on the beach
at any time. The rest of the year, pets are allowed on the
beach but
must be leashed and cleaned up after. The beach is located of

INDIAN
RIVER LIFE SAVING STATION & MUSEUM
1.5 miles north of the Indian River Inlet, 3.6 miles south of Dewey
Beach
Built in 1876, the Indian River Life-Saving
Station is one of few life-saving facilities on the Atlantic Coast
that still stands in its original location. The building served
as a Coast Guard station from 1915 to 1962, when it was damaged
by a severe storm and was decommissioned. In the 1990s, the Delaware
Seashore Preservation Foundation began work to preserve the building
as a museum, restoring it to its 1905 appearance and adding an
impressive gift shop. Since 2004, it has been in the hands of Delaware
State Parks, who conduct daily tours of the museum and host programs
out of the station site. Hours of operation: Seven days a week,
8:00-4:30 (Memorial Day – Labor Day) (call for off season
hours). Museum admission: Adults: $3.50, Children (6-12): $1.00,
Children (under 6): FREE, Seniors (62+): $2.50. Phone: 302-227-6991
THE LIGHTSHIP OVERFALLS
Pilottown Road on the Canal, Lewes
The Lewes Historical Society accepted from
the U. S. Coast Guard in 1973 one of the last lightships which
functioned on the East Coast. It stood for years off Boston and
upon being brought to Lewes was rechristened Overfalls for the
lightships which from 1892 to 1961 marked the entrance to the Delaware
Bay. The ship's move to Lewes, its preparation for a museum role,
and its relocation to a permanent berth made available by the city
in 1975, have all been major undertakings overseen by the Lewes
Historical Society and later by the Overfalls Maritime Museum Foundation
(OMMF). OMMF is now working to preserve and restore the ship so
this national treasure (one of only 17 surviving lightships of
a U.S. fleet that at one time numbered 179) will be available for
future generations.
